Howling Frog Books is hosting an Arthurian Literature Challenge, being I am behind with my Book Club December reads that are Arthurian and the club has selected an Arthurian piece in the near future I will tackle this challenge.
The rule basics, sign-up and full details at Howling Frog's Blog:
My goal will be Paladin with 7 books, including a non-fiction work. See my thoughts for this level by following the read more link.
The rule basics, sign-up and full details at Howling Frog's Blog:
- Challenge runs from January 1 - December 31, 2014
- Arthurian "cousins" count.
- Works are categorized by date; Old (pre-1800), Modern (1800-1950), and Recent (1950+). If you wish to read Recent works, that's fine, but you must read more Old and Modern works than Recent.
- Page: read 2 works, one of which may be Recent.
- Squire: read 3-4 works, one may be recent and one must be Old.
- Knight: read 5-6 works. Two may be Recent and one must be Old.
- Paladin: read more than 6 works. Two may be Recent and two must be Old, unless you include a non-fiction work (see Bonus).
My goal will be Paladin with 7 books, including a non-fiction work. See my thoughts for this level by following the read more link.
The December 2013 read of the Dead Writers Society is The Once and Future King by T.H. White. This book actually consists of four books; The Sword and the Stone, The Witch in the Wood, Ill-Made Knight and Candle in the Wind. T.H. White made changes to the first three books for the creation of The Once and Future King. I wanted to read them in original form and compare them to the version that appears in The Once and Future King. Needless to say, I am way behind and the changes in book one have been fascinating to compare I wonder what book two hold in store as the original is said to be twice as long as the reworked version. I will be reading The Sword and the Stone (2013 read won't count for this challenge), The Witch in the Wood, and Ill-Made Knight from original stand-alone books and comparing by skimming sections in The Once and Future King. Candle in the Wind is only found in the combined version so I will read it from The Once and Future King; it was actually published in 1958 so I will count as recent.
So that leaves me with a project list that is shaping up as follows:
