Amazon needs to stop tempting me with history books in the daily deals. Today includes Between Giants: The Battle for the Baltics in World War II by Prit Buttar for $1.99.
Prit Buttar spent his education years at Oxford and London learning medicine and then served in the British Army as a doctor and now works as a General Practitioner and has served on the General Practitioners Committee of the British Medical Association.
Between Giants is the second WWII novel by Buttar, the first was Battleground Prussia: The Assault on Germany's Eastern Front 1944-45. Battleground of Prussia deals with the final months of the war, between the Red Army advancing onto German soil to the final collapse of Hilter's regime.
Between Giants explores the suffering of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia as they are caught between the Soviet Union and the Third Reich battling for control. This area was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939, followed by the Germans in 1941 and then once again by the Soviet Union in 1944-45. Soviet troops took heavy losses at 'Courland Cauldron' (Courland, Latvia) during repeated assaults by the German and Latvian troops until they were finally able to get the upper hand. Showing no mercy the Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians that had stood with Germany were executed. The area lost over 20% of its population during the war. This novel weaves together the tale of these nations and the people living there.
