Review of Magic Marks the Spot by Caroline Carlson
Series: The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates, Book 1
Caroline Carlson does a fantastic job introducing us to the young determined Hilary. Hilary has only one desire in life, and it doesn't include pink frills. I adored this book, I found myself chuckling to some of the antics and happenings for our young heroine. Hilary longs to be a pirate on the open seas and no way do these plans include finishing school. Just what are her parents thinking, she has no desire to live among the high society girls of Miss Pimm's Pemberton.
Does Hilary have the smarts, with the help of her pet gargoyle (yes, a pet gargoyle), to escape her governess and Miss Primm's finishing school to become a pirate?
This will make a SHIVER ME TIMBERS bedtime read-aloud for parents to enjoy with their kids. Be warned, they will probably be begging for one more chapter each night. Or your independent reading child will be found under the covers with the flashlight sneaking in more reading time, that is if they can sneak it out of your hands.
The typeset layout includes some variation when it includes copies of notices posted and letters written, which I always find a fun treat in a book. The map included is a bonus as well, I love it when a book includes one for reference.
Grab your pirate hat and set sail on the first in the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates series.
