I've started my January Around-the-World read for the Dead Writers Society Challenge on Goodreads. This month's guideline was to select a departed author from North America (excluding the United States) but including the islands and into Central America.
I selected Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys: A prequel to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre focusing on the life of Antoinette Cosway, the devilish madwoman in the attic of the manor.
Jean Rhys grew up in Dominica and left in 1907 at the age of 16 to be educated in Great Britain. She grew up hating the English culture feeling displaced by the colonization of Dominica by the British Empire.
I have finished Part One of the novel covering Antoinette Cosway's childhood in Jamaica. Her childhood as a young white girl in the recently emancipated slave area was rough; her family was sneered upon and forced into isolation for safety reasons.
