The January Children's Classic Literature event, hosted by Simpler Pastimes, includes a Read-A-Long of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum this weekend.
Here it is, Saturday evening and I am 65% done with the book at this point of the event.
I really would like to know how come Dorothy's shoes are Ruby Red in the movie. For such a famous iconic symbol they don't fit the book!
Still time to join in!
A few passages I made notes of from reading to this point.
"It must be inconvenient to be made of flesh,” said the Scarecrow, thoughtfully; “for you must sleep, and eat and drink. However, you have brains, and it is worth a lot of bother to be able to think properly."
“No, my head is quite empty,” answered the Woodman; “but once I had brains, and a heart also; so, having tried them both, I should much rather have a heart.”
“I shall take the heart,” returned the Tin Woodman; “for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world.”
“You people with hearts,” he said, “have something to guide you, and need never do wrong; but I have no heart, and so I must be very careful. When Oz gives me a heart of course I needn’t mind so much.”
“That is a first rate idea,” said the Lion. “One would almost suspect you had brains in your head, instead of straw.”
“No,” she answered, “one is of tin, and one of straw; one is a girl and another a Lion. None of them is fit to work, so you may tear them into small pieces.” ~ Wicked Witch of the West
