From The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann
We meet a character referred to as "The Uzanne", a woman very handy with a fan in her day. Duke Karl leans in and says
"An Englishman once said 'women are armed with fans as men
with swords, and sometimes do more execution with them.' "
The Englishman referred to in this quote is Joseph Addison, founder of The Spectator magazine; in 1711 he penned a letter in the form of a satirical account on the rage for fans at the time.
