I just noticed A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906 is on sale. It is priced at $1.99 down from just under $10.00.
Simon Winchester gets his science credentials from Oxford where he studied geology. I have his Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 (which is also on sale for $1.99) in my to-read pile already. Not only do his writings talk about the science behind these massive events but it explores the aftermath of life for those left behind to pick-up the pieces.
I have watched some documentaries on Krakatoa and can imagine how the inhabitants of the world believed the world exploded on this day. Indonesia is still rocked with large earthquakes and the continuing growth of the Anak Krakatau Mountain in the region.
Three-quarters of the relatively young city of San Francisco was destroyed during the earthquake of 1906. While San Francisco was established in 1776 it wasn't until the gold rush in 1849 that the area started to see significant growth. How does a young city rebuild from this massive destruction in the short period from 1906 to 1915 when rebuilding was substantially completed?
I will be adding Krakatoa to my 2014 reading list at the least [History Challenge], not sure if I will be able to squeeze in both of these.
