First off, these covers are stunning. They belong to the Legends of the Ancient North series printed by Penguin Classics. For older books that fall under the classic dead author category I lean towards books published by Penguin Classics or Oxford World's Classics. Yes, that is a personal preference.
This challenge is all about trying to get through the "classics" I missed (avoided) earlier in life. The word "classic" is highly subjective to each person, so for the purpose of this challenge the author has to no longer be among the living for the book to qualify. Sorry if you are an author among the living and think your work classifies as a classic, maybe so, but just not for this list.

Goal is to read 45 books that fall into this category. Books may be used to count in other challenges. List of books will be filled-in as completed under the read more link. | |
I don't have a solid list yet of what these 45 books will include. To avoid confusion with the final completed reads list I will refrain from creating a nice numbered list at this time and just list in raw form. The 2014 C.S. Lewis Project takes care of sixteen works. DWS has selected the first two reads for the year at this point, consisting of The Great Gatsby and Le Morte d'Arthur and the Legend of the Round Table, bringing me to eighteen. I have seven books from dead authors on my Tackle My Currently Reading project, which brings the pencil total to twenty-five.
1. Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner (1/2/14)
2. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis (1/8/14)
3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1/10/14)
4. Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia by C.S. Lewis (1/18/14)
5. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (1/24/14)
6. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (1/26/14)
7. The Elephant and His Secret - Fable based on Gabriela Mistral's work by Doris Dana (2/4/14)
